Justin Sofio Cracks Top Ten at San Jose
Justin Sofio earned his best Champ Car Atlantic result of the season with an eighth place finish in the Mathiasen Motorsports/RLM Investments entry at the Canary Foundation San Jose Grand Prix. Moving up 14 places from over the 45 lap event, Sofio notched a bonus championship point for gaining the most race positions, and the team also garnered the Sherwin-Williams Design Award for their car's striking livery and paintwork.
"San Jose was one of the closest and most competitive fields I have ever been in," said Sofio. "We worked hard all weekend to get a good race car by maximizing mechanical grip and straight line speed for this very tight track. As the race unfolded I knew I had the car to run with the lead group but then the caution flags flew. It looked like a demolition derby at times, but I stayed patient, watched for opportunities and worked my way up. Cam Binder called a great race from our pit, Jay Schindle made sure that I had a strong car all weekend, and I'm really pleased for my team owner Ray Mathiasen. We've definitely had our share of disappointment this season, and everyone deserved a top 10 result. This was a great way to end our two month tour on the road, and winning the award for the best looking car in the field was great. We're really looking forward to Denver."
Team Manager Cam Binder was impressed with his driver's performance.
"Justin drove a very smart race and kept his nose clean while others were attempting high risk passes that often worked against them. He was patient and stayed with the lead pack which was our strategy from the start and it paid off today."
For team owner Ray Mathiasen, San Jose was the highlight of a challenging season.
"Finishing 8th was truly a great weekend for us, and winning the Sherwin-Williams award for the best appearing car was a welcome bonus. What a great feeling!"
The Mathiasen Motorsports team is now preparing to build on their success at the next Champ Car Atlantic round on the Grand Prix of Denver's Pepsi Center street course, August 11-13.
