Vancouver native David Rutledge qualified his #19 Lynx Racing Swift 008.a in fifth position for the start of tomorrow's CART Toyota Atlantic support race at the Medic Drug Grand Prix of Cleveland Presented by Firstar. Rutledge's primary car was damaged in an off-course excursion during morning practice and he was forced to qualify the backup car. Martin Basso will start from the pole.
"The team did a tremendous job in getting the backup car ready and getting it set up so it performed even better than the primary car," said Rutledge, who celebrated his 23rd birthday on June 28th. "We always seem to have some kind of trouble at Cleveland, so this may actually be a good thing in terms of getting that out of the way before the race. Fifth position puts me on the inside row for the start, and if we can avoid the inevitable first-turn tangle, we should be in the hunt for the win."
Rutledge won the previous CART Toyota Atlantic round at Montreal, setting a record by being the first driver ever to score back-to-back victories from the pole at the Circuit Gilles-Villeneuve. Montreal was his second victory of the year; Rutledge also won from the pole in the opening round at the Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach.
Rutledge currently leads the Championship after four races with a total of 64 points, followed by the pair of Orsi and Ave who both stand at 53 points. Basso won the bonus point for winning the pole and currently sits in fourth place with a total of 33 points.
