Hinchcliffe to Road Atlanta for Season Finale
Toronto, Ontario (October 01, 2008) -- James Hinchcliffe draws to a close his 2008 Cooper Tires Presents The Atlantic Championship Powered by Mazda campaign this weekend as Round 11, the season finale, concludes at Georgia's Road Atlanta circuit on Friday 3rd October.
The 2.54-mile Braselton race track not only hosts the famed 'Petit Le Mans' American Le Mans Series race this weekend but also the climax to the Atlantic Championship season with the title to be decided at the checkered on Friday. Hinchcliffe had hoped to be in the mix for just such an occasion but a challenging second-half of the season saw the 21-year-old Canadian surrender his points lead after a strong start to the year, one which included dominating Round 2 at Laguna Seca in May for his second career Atlantic victory.
James arrives at Road Atlanta with a top-five points finish still on the table, 'Hinch' currently sitting sixth overall on 171 points just 10 adrift of Round 3 race winner Junior Strous in fifth. With eight top-ten finishes, including three podiums, and just one DNF to his credit this year, Hinchcliffe has proved to be a consistent force behind the wheel of Forsythe Pettit Racing's #3 INDECK/TireRack.com Swift Mazda-Cosworth entry.
While Road Atlanta hosts its first Atlantic race in 15 years, James heads into Friday's 50-minute race with more recent experience having recorded a top-five finish at the track in Star Mazda in 2005.
"I really enjoy competing at Road Atlanta," stated Hinchcliffe. "It's a great track and it's a thrill to fire an Atlantic car around it. There's a bunch of quick corners which really tests the limits of the aero package on the car which is definitely one of its strengths. The circuit really has a nice flow to it; you can build up a decent rhythm here. It's almost Mosport-like, which is good as that's always been one of my favorite tracks.
"It's great to be back here competing. They've resurfaced the place since I was last here and the grip levels are amazing. I'm happy to be wrapping the season at a track as good as this one. The year hasn't exactly followed the path of the pre-season script we wrote but if we can end it on a high note that would make everyone feel a lot better. I'm just going to go out there and give it my all. There's going to be a ton of people here for the weekend, the atmosphere's already amazing so all in all it's a fitting finale for this season's Atlantic Championship."
Both qualifying sessions for Round 11 of the 2008 Cooper Tires Presents The Atlantic Championship Powered by Mazda are set for Thursday 2nd October with Q1 starting at 11:45am ET followed by Q2 at 4:20pm ET. Round 11 gets underway at 2:10pm ET on Friday 3rd October -- www.roadatlanta.com
