DSTP's Buddy Rice provisionally qualifies 9th for Portland Atlantic race.

Portland, Oregon (June 14, 2002) - Buddy Rice today set the 9th fastest time in provisional qualifying for tomorrow's fifth round of the 2002 CART Toyota Atlantic Championship series at Portland International Raceway, part of the GI Joe's 200 CART FedEx Championship weekend. Rice, driving the #27 DSTP Motorsports Swift 014.a, set a time of 1:03.335 for an average speed of 103.730 miles per hour around PIR's 1.969-mile permanent road course.

"Since we didn't have any testing data from this track, we started out a little bit behind the curve," said Rice, who won the Atlantic championship title in 2000 with DSTP. "We were off on the gearing in the morning but got that sorted out by the afternoon. We've got the car in the window and pretty close to where it needs to be, we just have some fine-tuning to do. We're going in the right direction and should be in better shape tomorrow."

Tomorrow's CART Toyota Atlantic activities begin with the second round of qualifying at 9:00 am PT, followed by the 35-lap, 68.915-mile race later in the afternoon at 3:30 pm. The race will be televised tomorrow on Speed Channel at 10:00 pm ET (7:00 pm PT).
