Bessette awarded Gilles-Villeneuve Trophy
Montreal, August 31st. -- At the completion of his first year in the Toyota Formula Atlantic Championship, Antoine Bessette was honored at the awards ceremony held at the Montreal Casino with the prestigious Gilles-Villeneuve Trophy, a tribute any race car driver will cherish for the rest of his career. The homage was paid to the French Canadian for his racing abilities, the sportsmanship and dedication he demonstrated throughout the season. 2004 recipient was Scot Ryan Dalziel.
"This is one day I'll remember for the rest of my life, cheered Bessette. In the morning I win the last round of the season on Circuit Gilles-Villeneuve and at night I am awarded the trophy that bears his name. For a young driver like me, anything related to one of the greatest drivers of all times is magic! It comes to me as a big surprise. But most of all, the reasons and the people involved in this choice leave me without words. As we are about to start negotiating for next year, this has to be very flattering and a tremendous boost of motivation."
Chosen by experts
This prestigious award is conferred annually "to the driver who possesses extraordinary ability, has that special "star quality" and who has been distinguished through sportsmanship, dedication and perseverance in the face of disappointment". A special committee of series officials and team owners are the voting members for this coveted prize.
"Apart from winning the championship, claims AB, this is the most thrilling honor I could have gotten. I am thankful to the people who gave me this award but I remain humble when I think of what is ahead of me."
A very positive 2005 record
2005 was very productive for Antoine. He earned two wins on Canadian ground, in Toronto and Montreal. He was second in Long Beach after starting from the pole. He clinched another second in Cleveland and was in the Top Five nine times in the 12-round calendar.
"I enjoyed working with Polestar Racing Group, a very professional team, and learned the science of setting up a race car, the fundamental thing in this series and what most team owners look for. Things are looking bright for 2006."
