MIAMI, Fla. (Sept. 25, 2003) - It has been a season of up's and down's for Dorricott Racing but a strong finish at Miami Bayfront Park in Sunday's Argent Mortgage Toyota Atlantic 100k and the Toyota Atlantic season finale would be a fitting way to conclude the 2003 Atlantic season.
The 55-lap (63.25 miles) Atlantic sprint around the 1.15-mile temporary street circuit is scheduled to drop the green flag at 10:30 a.m. ET. It is the featured support event for the Grand Prix Americas, Presented by Sportsbook.com, CART Championship race that runs later that day.
Diaz comes to Miami in eighth place with 81 points. His goal is to displace seventh place Danica Patrick, who holds a 12-point advantage with 93 points, or ideally have good fortune finally come his way by upending sixth place Joey Hand, who has 98 points. If Diaz holds one advantage, it is the same that all drivers are holding this weekend. It is the first time on this circuit for any Atlantic or CART driver. Nobody has an distinct advantage outside of their existing skills. Diaz has proven in the past he is a quick learner on street circuits.
Regardless, Diaz remains one of Atlantic's most consistent finishers, in part, because Dorricott Racing's cars have not suffered any mechanical breakdowns during races this year. Atlantic has recorded 403 race laps prior to Miami and Diaz has completed the second most of any driver with 394 laps. Only Jonathan Macri has completed more with all 403 laps.
Diaz is also one of only three drivers to start from the pole this season. His pole at Monterrey, Mexico, was his third career pole position while driving for Dorricott Racing. Only Atlantic champion A.J. Allmendinger and Ryan Dalziel have won poles in 2003.
