Young Greek Hopeful Vasilis Zahos to Test with Mi-Jack Conquest Racing Atlantic Team Today at MSR Houston
Indianapolis, Indiana, November 27, 2006 -- A lot of young race car drivers could only dream of driving an Atlantic car. For Vasilis Zahos that dream is becoming a reality. As a young Greek driver, Zahos was selected to test with the Mi-Jack Conquest Atlantic Team in order to develop his skills in view of the Athens Champ Car race project in 2008. The test, which will take place at the MSR Houston track today, will also be the first one conducted under the watchful eye of new Team Manager Steve Ragan.
"The Greek Champ Car project is very exciting and with that project in perspective, I'm glad that we have the opportunity today to evaluate a young Greek driver like Vasilis. He's a perfect fit with our Atlantic Team and our philosophy of developing young drivers," said Eric Bachelart, co-owner of Mi-Jack Conquest Racing.
Zahos, a 22-year-old from Athens, may have little experience in open-wheel cars but he is glad to have been chosen to test with the Conquest Atlantic Team and he sees today's test as his first step toward his dream of racing in the Champ Car World Series.
"I'm very excited about testing with the Mi-Jack Conquest Atlantic Team and also a little nervous because it will be the first time that I drive an Atlantic car and I want to do well. It will be a special experience for me. My goal for this test is to get used to the car, learn as much as possible and to do my best," said Zahos, who spent this week at the Conquest race shop in Indianapolis. "I love to race and I hope to be able to race here (in the United States) one day soon."
Like most drivers Zahos' passion comes from racing go-karts. He started at the age of nine and through his eight years in that type of racing he accumulated countless victories and won six Greek go-karting Championships. In 2003, he made the switch to cars. He participated in the Toyota Yaris and the Nissan Micra Cup and won top rookie honors in both series.
The last few seasons the Athens-native won a couple of Championships; in '04, he was crowned Nissan Micra Cup Champion and in '05 he was the MG ZR Cup Champion. For 2006, he continued to race cars but took up English lessons in July and made the move to the United States about a month ago to pursue a ride in North American open-wheel racing.
