Lynx Racing driver David Rutledge, 22, of Vancouver BC, battled handling difficulties and blistered tires to bring his #19 Lynx Racing Swift 008.a home in 12th place in the CART Toyota Atlantic support race at the Motorola 300 at Gateway International Raceway. "We were running competitive times and closing on the leaders, but on lap 15 the handling of the car started to go away," said Rutledge. "The team gave me a really good car for both qualifying and the race, but early on I felt something change. I radioed the team and told them what was happening and we tried various adjustments, but the car just wouldn't respond so I the tires had probably already blistered by that point. Even though it wasn't the result we hoped for, or expected, we still learned a lot about running these cars on ovals that will be to our benefit next year. On the positive side, we have a good street course setup, and the next race, which is the last one of the season, is in the streets of Houston in two weeks." Rutledge's Lynx teammate, Mike Conte, 31, of Seattle, Washington, experienced similar difficulties and nursed his ailing car for the last third of the 50-lap race to finish 14th. "When you've got a good setup on an oval, it's just about the most fun we can have in a race car, but when you don't, it makes for a long afternoon," said Conte. "My car, like David's was good early in the race, but as the tires went away I had to keep making adjustments to the sway bars and weight jackers to try and compensate. By about two-thirds of the way through the race I'd run out of things to adjust and was just hanging on for the finish. The computer data from the car will show us exactly what went wrong, and we'll be ready to go for the season finale at Houston." Lynx Racing graduate Buddy Rice, now driving for DSTP Motorsports, won the CART Toyota Atlantic championship with a second-place finish at Gateway, and will be testing with the Target Ganassi CART team at Firebird Raceway in Phoenix next week. The race was won, from the pole, by Case Montgomery, with Martin Basso finishing second. </pre> CART Toyota Atlantic Television Coverage (EDT)
