CHUCK WEST PREPARES FOR RACE AND BABY DELIVERY
CAMPBELL, Calif (April 8) - - Chuck West, of Sonoma, Calif., is finding himself with a few more last minute details to attend as he heads for the Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach on April 11-13, and round two of the 12-race KOOL/TOYOTA Atlantic Championship. West and his wife, Missy, are expecting their first child on April 17. Consequently, Chuck and Missy discovered they were too close for comfort in the eyes of commercial air carriers so they were unable to fly to Long Beach due to the projected delivery date. Packing up the big rig with a baby car seat and miscellaneous baby items in tow, they embarked on the seven hour drive to southern California. With a Long Beach doctor on call, the couple is prepared for delivery. "Missy saw the doctor just before we left and the doctor sees no indication of delivering this weekend.," said West. "She feels and looks great. However, we're prepared just in case!" Family planning comes during a very sentimental and important race weekend for West, who made his Atlantic debut at Long Beach last year. West turned a brilliant run and finished third despite piloting an older Ralt RT-40. "I am looking forward to this weekend," said West. "I like this course and the race atmosphere that Long Beach provides. I have been very pleased with our testing and I have a lot of confidence in my Red Line Oil No. 14 Ralt RT-41 and team. I think we'll do well, and I think we have a realistic possibility of returning to the podium."
In regard to becoming a father, West was more logistical. "I am not nervous, at least I don't think I am. I am taking it day by day. My wife (Missy) has been really supportive of my racing and has been at all of my races. We are both hoping that the delivery happens following this weekend where we both can take a breather before I leave for testing on my way to Nazareth". West has high self-imposed expectations especially since he set a new track record in winning the pole position at the Atlantic season opener at Homestead on February 28. West, who ran five races in 1996, earned two podium finishes. Returning in 1997 with a more competitive and new Ralt RT-41, West secured funding to cover the entire season, although he admits to it being significantly less than many of the other fully financed programs. West was born and raised in Orange County, Calif. He later moved to the wine country of Sonoma where he owns and operates a 12-car "arrive 'n drive" Formula Mazda operation. West has scheduled the following appearances during the Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach:
