Andreas Wirth, Forsythe Racing's Fab 1 of 4, Takes Long Beach By Storm!
Andreas Wirth takes his first win of the 2006 Champ Car Atlantic Championship. More determined than ever to reach the goal of winning the Champ Car Atlantic Championship in 2006 due to a disappointing end to his 2005 season where he sustained a back injury and missed the final two events, Andreas took to the streets of Long Beach and dominated the season opener.
It was an exciting weekend for Wirth, one that he'd looked forward to with eager anticipation. After the emotional highs and lows of doing well in practice on Friday morning and then crashing halfway through provisional qualifying in the afternoon, Andreas pulled it together and not only took Pole Position on Saturday, but set a new track record in so doing. Wirth clocked a 1: 16.082 in his Mazda/Cosworth race car, averaging 93.121 mph which bested the 1:16.267 turned in by A.J. Allmendinger in 2003.
As if the new track record and pole position weren't enough for the young German, Wirth continued on with a commanding performance. And, despite three yellow flags that broke his rhythm, Wirth confidently led the field from flag to flag with no one seriously threatening his position.
Needless to say, Andreas was all smiles as he related his victory, "I was very mad at myself on Friday when I threw it in the wall, but I knew I had a car to win. It was a great race today! I can't tell you how happy I am and how good I feel! There couldn't be a better start for the 2006 Championship and I want to thank all the guys at Forsythe Racing and my Engineer Nick for the tool they gave me to win."
You can catch Andreas' win on Speed Channel this coming Sunday the 16th at 1pm Eastern time and repeated on April 19th at 3pm.
Round 2 of the Champ Car Atlantic Championship will be held in Houston on May 13th, 2006.
