Markus Niemela just two points from championship lead after Laguna

Finnish driver Markus Niemela improves in the highest non-oval open wheel series in North America. A month ago Niemela opened his season with 7th place finish in Long Beach Grand Prix and this Sunday, when the series continued in Laguna Seca, Niemela finished in 4th place. Winner of the race was Canadian James Hinchcliffe.

After two race weekends, 24 year old Niemela now lies in fourth place in the series only two points behind the leader.

Niemela's team mate German Andreas Wirth finished 8th in Laguna Seca. The other Finnish driver in the series, Henri Karjalainen, finished 16th one lap behind Niemela.

"Markus has huge potential. As soon as he becomes more familiar with the car, we can expect race wins during this season" Markus Niemela's Team Manager John Brooks said after the race.

Markus Niemela said his car felt now better than ever before.

"During the first few laps I was still getting used to the setup and was not able to follow guys in front of me. As the race went on I was doing the same lap times as the leader of the race. At that point the cars in front of me were too far to be caught anyway so I didn't want to take any risks as I was fast enough that guys behind me could not catch me up." Niemela said after the race.

The Formula Atlantic -series continues in five weeks at Mont-Tremblant in Canada. In the meantime Markus Niemela will spend some time back home in Finland.
