Summerton Can Win Champ Car Atlantics in 2007
Sebring Sunday 28th 2007 - When offered the opportunity to drive for Walker Racing at the Sunday Sebring Atlantic test Jonathan Summerton jumped at it. Jonathan said, " It was a great opportunity to compare the Atlantic Car with the Formula 3 car." . Although Jonathan had never driven the Champ Car Atlantic car he started the session off motoring through the field in a rain soaked track. By his 10th lap he was already pushing the leaders and by the end of the session he was third fastest Way to go, Jonathan!!! After analyzing his data with his engineer they found a couple of places to improve.
In the next session, under dry conditions, again the team could see Jonathan was going for it, continuously pulling his times down. 3rd fastest again, showing his ability go fast safely.
In the final test session everyone was out to prove they were the fastest. Jonathan went out and worked his way up the times reaching 3rd at the half way point. Coming in at 3rd fastest it was decided to try a different springs set up. Unfortunately this caused an inbalance in the car which caused problems, slowing the car down. While Jonathan was struggling with the handling issues his gearbox started to play up in changing down, stopping Jonathan hopes of improving his times and finishing the session in 10th less than 3 tenths off pole.
Afterwards Jonathan commented, "I am very pleased with my first day in the car at this Atlantic test and yet disappointed, as I knew we could be at the top of the times if we hadn't had the balance problems. My data showed I could have been fastest on my theoretical It was unfortunate. Derrick Walker's Team Australia did a great job in helping me learn the car and giving me a really well set up car. I think we startled a few people with my speed after only a few laps."
On Monday Jonathan jets off to Australia to represent Team USA in the A1 GP series as a test driver. Jonathan commented that there he hopes to set the world talking about him and his aim to be the next F1 driver. For 2007 Jonathan is still trying to find a ride in either Formula 3 Euro Series or Champ Car Atlantics.
