Simpson to start on second row in Mexico
Mid-Ohio, May 20th, 2006. -- Gelles Racing Champ Car Atlantic driver Stephen Simpson will start from second row in Sunday morning 3rd round of the Atlantic Champ Car series held at Fundidora Park in Monterrey, Mexico. The South African was fourth in the second qualifying in his #14 Western Union machine but overall times were faster than his second place of yesterday. His teammate Robbie Pecorari suffered a suspension problem with an off-track excursion and will start a distant 23rd. Meanwhile, the first round of the Formula BMW USA in Mid-Ohio saw four Gelles drivers finish in the Top Ten with Adrian Herberts best of them with a 6th overall. All Gelles racers will race tomorrow with events in Monterrey and Mid-Ohio.
"Stephen finally demonstrates how fast he is, said team owner Bob Gelles. I think he will step on the podium tomorrow: his car was very quick today and he missed first row by 0,14 second. He will be in the hunt tomorrow for his first win on a track he likes very much. Robbie struggled all weekend and never found the proper setup with engineer Dave Conti. He will start from the back, but he proved last week in Houston he can come from a long way in traffic."
4 BMW drivers in Top Ten
Gelles drivers finished like a train taking positions 6 to 11 in the first round of the season. Only two of them had qualified in Top 10 after they experienced some trouble with tire grip this weekend. Adrien Herberts was 7th with John Zartarian following just ahead of Sebastian Saavedra, Maxime Pelletier and Ryan Campbell (11th). Joel Jackson's day ended when he hit a stopped car on the track on lap 13.
Veterans Herberts and Zartarian claimed their cars handled well and thought they would have gained a few more positions had the race not been checkered under full-course yellow. Saavedra and Pelletier felt they careed more speed too. Saavedra lost positions at the start before he settled for 9th when the race was slowed down by yellow flags. Pelletier made up a few positions in the early stages and had a race incident with another car while holding his ground but motored on to the finish. Ryan Campbell made up six positions and was pretty happy with picking up some points in the standings.
Sunday morning starts
Simpson and Pecorari will start their race tomorrow in the usual Atlantic Champ Car feature preview while the Gelles young guns will take the green flag at around the same time with Zartarian leading the pack in 6th and Saavedra in 8th. Jackson's car should be ready on time according to crew chief Martin Lastreto who had his team work on the #22 car.
