Jon Forgarty needed only one of two available qualifying laps to take pole position and a new track record for tomorrow afternoon's 70-lap race #3 in the 2004 Toyota Atlantic Championship Presented by Yokohama.
The 2002 champion, the final driver to qualify, toured his #96 Pacific Coast Motorsports Swift around the historic Milwaukee Mile at 24.676 seconds for a lap of 150.559mph, becoming the only driver - of 12 - to break the 150mph mark, just as he had in yesterday evening's practice.
"On paper the car looked like it would work, but that's just paper," Fogarty said. "I knew I had a good race car in practice, but I've got quick guys all around me. This is a 70-lap race, so we'll see what happens."
Teammate Alex Figge starts second in the #69 Swift after being the eighth driver to take two qualifying laps. Figge's 24.915-second lap was good for 149.115mph. "Ovals aren't my favorite things," Figge admitted, "but I enjoy driving them. The team made sure I was comfortable in the car."
Last year's winner, Scotsman Ryan Dalziel starts third in the #28 Pro-Works Swift with a lap of 24.920 seconds (149.085mph). After being third in the combined practice, Dalziel didn't have the setup right for qualifying this evening. "We experimented a lot. I thought I had a pretty respectable car until Jon went out and, I'll be honest," he said, "we lost a little time this morning with those changes."
Bryan Sellers, driving Lynx Racing's #19 Swift earned the outside spot on row two with his lap of 25.044 seconds (148.347mph) on his first lap, one of only three drivers to post their best on the first try. Rookie Ronnie Bremer earned the fifth starting spot with his lap of 25.054 seconds (148.288mph).
Danica Patrick starts sixth in the #24 Argent Mortgage Swift with her second lap of 25.148 seconds (147.733mph). Canadian rookie Andrew Ranger, quick yesterday in practice and leader of this afternoon's final practice before qualifying had the #27 Tide/Charmin/Mr. Clean/Snugabye Swift step out on him in Turn 1 on his run and settled for seventh with his time of 25.169 seconds (147.610mph).
Rocky Moran Jr. starts eighth in the #4 Health Privileges car, followed by rookie Chris Festa in the #25 Space Pak/CareCentric Swift. Alex Garcia's #9 Dixien/Omnisource Swift lines up in 10th place, while two rookies, Jonathan Bomarito and Josh Hunt share the final row of the grid.
The 70-lap Toyota Atlantic race takes the green flags tomorrow evening at 5:15PM and will be limited to 50 minutes. The race will be shown on SPEED TV on Sunday, June 6th at 2PM EDT.
