Diaz seventh in Denver provisional qualifying

DENVER, Colorado (August 29, 2003) - Consistent improvement kept pace with the race of the field but only enough to provisionally qualify seventh for round 11 of the 12-race Toyota Atlantic Championship at the Centrix Financial Grand Prix of Denver, Sunday, Aug. 31.

A.J. Allmendinger placed his car atop the time charts with a best lap of 1:07.653 (87.641 mph) to shatter the existing one-lap track record of 1:09.085 (85.825 mph) established by Ryan Dalziel in the inaugural Toyota Atlantic visit to the Mile High City last year.

Diaz, who provisionally qualified the Dorricott Racing/Telmex Swift seventh fastest with a time of 1:08.723 (86.277 mph) around the nine-turn, 1.647-mile road course, was only 0.417-seconds off the pace of outside polesitter Michael Valiante.

Friday's morning practice was also competitive with a variety of changing times throughout the 30-minute session. Diaz ran as high as third fastest before posting the sixth quickest lap of 1:09.240 (85.633 mph).

Saturday's schedule for the CART Toyota Atlantic Championship begins with a 30-minute practice session beginning at 9:15 a.m. (MT), and followed by final qualifying from 3:00-3:30 p.m. (MT).

Live Timing & Scoring data from every session is available on the official web site of the CART Toyota Atlantic Championship, www.toyotaatlantic.com.
