NOTES FROM THURSDAY'S KOOL/TOYOTA ATLANTIC PRACTICE DAY AT THE CHICAGO MOTOR SPEEDWAY:
Andrew Bordin, with new sponsor NTN Bearing on board for this race, posted the fastest time of Thursday's KOOL/Toyota Atlantic Championship practice day with a time of 27.035 sec./137.022 mph around the 1.029-mile Chicago Motor Speedway.
Bordin, of Woodbridge, Ont., Canada, recorded his fast time in the second of two practice sessions. Early morning rain canceled most of the early practice sessions for all series competing this weekend.
Bordin's PPI teammate, points leader Anthony Lazzaro, was second quick at 27.089 sec./136.749 mph. Rookie Sam Hornish, Jr., was third (27.293 sec./135.727 mph), with Buddy Rice fourth (27.315 sec./135.618 mph.) Hornish's teammate, Mid-Ohio winner Kenny Wilden was fifth fastest (27.447 sec./134.955 mph).
ANDREW BORDIN (PPI-NTN Bearing Corp. Swift): "We made a few changes that seemed to work. Anthony (Lazzaro) and I are doing two different things, but it's good to see that both PPI cars are doing well today. I think there's more in it. We're having some balance issues, but if I sit down and think about the problems, I think we can fix them. I really like this track. It's really smooth."
ANTHONY LAZZARO (PPI-MCI WorldCom Swift): "The guys did a really good job on the car. We made some changes from this morning, and we're just trying to get adjusted to this new track. This place is pretty neat. It's a little different from the other ovals that we go to. It's going to make for a very good Atlantic race, but we still need to find a little more time to make the car a little more comfortable, and hopefully we can continue this."
The KOOL/Toyota Atlantic Championship will take the course at 8:45 a.m. on Friday, for the first of two practice sessions. Single-car qualifying is scheduled for 5:05 p.m. Friday.
