PAUL TRACY ON TOP OF THE TIME SHEET IN TODAY'S PRACTICE SESSIONS

CART FedEx Championship Series - PRACTICE Round 7 of 20 - Miller Lite 225

WEST ALLIS, Wisc., (June 4, 1999) - Team KOOL Green's Paul Tracy was fastest in today's practice at The Milwaukee Mile, while his teammate Dario Franchitti was 17th in preparation for the Miller Lite 225 this Sunday at 2:00 p.m. Central Time. (Tape Delay on ABC-TV at 4:00 p.m. ET)

Tracy's quick time was clocked in this morning's practice session when he powered his KOOL car around one-mile oval in 22.025 seconds at average speed of 168.681 mph. Greg Moore was second fastest with a lap of 22.052 seconds (168.475 mph), while Moore's teammate Patrick Carpentier was third (22.108 seconds / 168.048 mph). Franchitti's best timed lap of 22.512 seconds (165.032 mph) was also from this morning before midday rain changed track conditions and delayed the start of afternoon practice by more than an hour.

Tomorrow's schedule has the 26-car field back on track for final practice at 9:00 a.m. Central Time, with single-car qualifying beginning at 1:15 p.m. CT.

PAUL TRACY, #26 TEAM KOOL GREEN HONDA/REYNARD/FIRESTONE: (1st with a lap-time of 22.025 seconds / 168.681 mph) "We're first on the day and the Team KOOL Green car is great. We didn't use up any of our tires. The car was very good on old tires and now we've got an extra set (of tires) saved for the race, which is great. My experience here has been a big help here. My race engineer Tony Cicale was saying that we've got to slowly work up to speed today. And, I said 'don't worry, I've been around here a few times'. The car was good right off the trailer. That's a tribute to Dario because he came here testing and it's basically his setup we're using."

DARIO FRANCHITTI, #27 TEAM KOOL GREEN HONDA/REYNARD/FIRESTONE: (17th with a lap-time of 22.512 seconds / 165.032 mph) "We are still struggling for balance in setting up the car. We were a bit frustrated this morning because we did not get a clear lap. We still have a lot to do to sort our problems out. I'll sit down with the Team KOOL Green engineers to get it figured out tonight. Race-wise, I don't think the car is too bad. We have a couple of small problems for qualifying. We'll need to up the pace a little bit."

PPG-Dayton Indy Lights Championship - PRACTICE

Team KOOL Green's Jonny Kane struggled to find the optimum car setup this morning, posting the 14th best lap-time at The Milwaukee Mile. He circled the one-mile oval in 25.294 seconds, averaging 146.881 mph. In spite of his difficulties and rain that washed out afternoon practice, Kane remains just 0.556 seconds behind the quickest lap of the day by Mario Dominguez (24.738 seconds / 150.182 mph). Derek Higgins (24.760 seconds / 150.048 mph) and Felipe Giaffone (24.804 seconds / 149.782 mph) round out the top three.

JONNY KANE, #27 Team KOOL Green Lola T97/20: (14th with a lap-time of 25.294 seconds / 146.881 mph) "We had an understeer problem develop in our test here earlier this month. We're still trying to correct that problem. I think that if we can get some more bite (grip) at the front end of the KOOL car, we should pick up some more time in the corners. At the moment, I think it looks worse than it actually is. The rear of the car is very stable, so it's good that we are concentrating on only one part of the car setup. We made some changes for this afternoon, but unfortunately the rain ruined our chance to learn something new to improve the car."

KOOL/Toyota Atlantic Championship - QUALIFYING

Team KOOL Green's Alex Gurney will start 11th on the grid for tomorrow's 60-lap race at 3:00 p.m. CT. Gurney clocked a lap of 25.867 seconds at The Milwaukee Mile. Anthony Lazarro, meanwhile, is on the pole for the third consecutive race after posting a lap of 25.179 seconds. Alex Tagliani and Kenny Wilden round out the top three.

ALEX GURNEY, #27 Team KOOL Green Toyota/Swift: (11th with a lap-time of 25.867 seconds) "I'm reasonably happy with that qualifying session. We made some changes that we wanted to try in the practice session that got rained out. Unfortunately, the first time I got a chance to feel the changes was in qualifying. There's probably more we can do to improve the Team KOOL Green car. The car was still understeering pretty badly, which makes it really hard to start a quick lap by putting the power down. It didn't help that the tires weren't completely up to temperature. We'll start 11th and look to move up in the race."
