King Taco Backs Skerlong For 2007 Champ Car Atlantic Championship
Mukilteo, Washington (January 26, 2007) -- Carl Skerlong's 2007 Champ Car Atlantic Championship campaign received a further boost today ahead of official pre-season testing at Sebring, Saturday 27th -- Sunday 28th January, following the announcement that King Taco, the Los Angeles-based restaurant chain, will partner with the 18-year-old Washington-native for his rookie season competing for the US RaceTronics team.
King Taco, recognized as a leader in Mexican Fast Food for the past 30 years, through L.A. Restaurant Management will team with Skerlong, a high school senior at the Chrysalis School, Washington, in the #24 King Taco / US RaceTronics Swift Mazda-Cosworth throughout the 12-round 2007 Cooper Tires Presents The Champ Car Atlantic Championship Powered by Mazda.
L.A. Restaurant Management's Chief Executive Officer Luis Martinez, owner of two King Taco locations, is thrilled to be backing Skerlong. "The decision to back Carl in the Champ Car Atlantic Championship just made sense," Martinez commented. "For starters Carl's a great driver and he'll be racing in Las Vegas, Long Beach and San Jose this season, which believe it or not, we consider to be our marketplace. We think Carl can drive the car well enough to leave a mark on the fans! We also know that race fans travel and when they come to the Long Beach Grand Prix, for example, we hope that they remember to stop by at the King Taco concession stands located throughout the race venue."
"I'm both delighted and proud to represent King Taco on-track this season," stated Skerlong. "I've known Luis for a while and he was looking for a partnership that would give King Taco a return on its investment and the Champ Car Atlantic Championship delivers just that. I can't wait to get the official pre-season testing underway and see how we stack up against the competition in the #24 King Taco / US RaceTronics entry."
Skerlong's graduation to the Champ Car Atlantic Championship, the feeder category to the Champ Car World Series, follows his domination of the West Coast based Formula TR Pro Series, winning the 1600 Championship in 2005 before going on to score 16 wins from 19 starts in 2006 to clinch the 2000 Championship and rookie honors in both seasons.
Carl, a former member of the U.S. Junior Olympic Ski Team, backed up his open-wheel credentials with a trip to Europe to close out the 2006 season, enjoying a competitive spell in the Formula Renault UK Winter Series. Making his debut at the Brands Hatch and Croft circuits in England, Carl finished the four round 'mini' series an impressive eighth overall from a 26-strong field, most of whom had previous track knowledge, his record showing three top-eight finishes from three top-ten starts.
Official pre-season testing continues following this weekend's Atlantic outing at Sebring with additional tests scheduled at MSR Houston, Texas and Laguna Seca, California in February and March respectively. The 'Vegas Grand Prix Fueled by Visa' kicks off the 2007 Champ Car Atlantic Championship, the Las Vegas, Nevada street race set for Sunday 8th April.
