1998 TOYOTA GRAND PRIX OF LONG BEACH, APRIL 3 - 4

Lynx Racing rookie, Buddy Rice, 22, of Phoenix, Arizona -- in his first-ever day of competition in the intensely competitive KOOL/Toyota Atlantic Championship -- accomplished a really remarkable feat on Friday afternoon. In his first-ever on-track experience in the ultra-competitive Atlantic series... with just three laps of practice in the morning session... and five laps of dry track qualifying in the late afternoon before the rain set in... he qualified his #65 Lynx Racing Ralt RT-41 on the provisional pole for the inaugural race of the 1998 KOOL/Toyota Atlantic Championship season at the Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach. This is the motorsports equivalent of a rookie phenom throwing a no hitter in his first pro game; and the only reason that it's merely really remarkable instead of downright astounding is that there's another qualifying session on Saturday, April 4 at noon to set the final starting grid for the 4:00 p.m. Atlantic race... and if it's dry for the final Saturday qualifying session, everyone will be going much faster and the final qualifying order may change. Rice turned a 1.02:924-sec. lap around the 1.574-mile Long Beach street circuit; at an average lap speed of 90.051 mph. His teammate, Memo Gidley, 28, of Novato, California, who finished second overall in the Atlantic series driving for Lynx in 1997, qualified second at 1.03.282 mph (89.542 mph). The 38-lap event will be televised on ESPN2, Saturday, April 11, 4:30-5:30 p.m. Eastern Standard Time. Lynx Racing, now entering its ninth year of operation, is a uniquely successful driver development team owned by two women, Peggy Haas and Jackie Doty. The team is dedicated to seeking out young drivers with championship potential and helping them make the jump to the top levels of the sport.
