Jonathan Bomarito cruised to the top of the time sheets Friday afternoon during a fairly routine qualifying session. The Northern California native seemed at ease in his new ride with Mathiasen Motorsports. That team is of course delighted with their new prominence in the Atlantic Series paddock, but they will be working hard tonight to make sure the pole position isn't taken away tomorrow. And, they should do that, because this field is quite tight, with less than one second separating Bomarito and thirteenth place.

Rookies Markus Niemela of Finland and Floridian Jonathan Summerton were surprise top three qualifiers. Niemela, who thankfully lacks Kimi Raikkonen's English monotone skills, is still getting used to his Atlantics car. Summerton has a similar issue, as he achieved the US's first win in A1GP last weekend in Shanghai and finds the two cars quite different. Many of the drivers could not get a clear best lap, so it is likely that tomorrow's top three will be a little different.

Friday morning's fast qualifier James Hinchcliffe was fourth, with Carl Skerlong in 5th. 2006 race winner Andreas Wirth sixth fastest, followed by Junior Strous and Skerlong's PCM teammate David Garza. Rounding out the top 10 are Alan Sciuto and Kevin Lacroix. Any of these 10 cars could take the pole tomorrow and all could be a factor in the race. In fact, there is so much talent in this field that it would be a sucker bet to place a wager on the outcome.

As this goes to press, somewhere in the paddock, Bomarito is pacing, and to be sure, he is looking for that last bit of speed that will make it all look effortless tomorrow. The thing is, so are the other drivers. It should be interesting.
