ARCA POINTS LEADER STENHOUSE JR., TO RACE USAC SILVER CROWN CAR FOR CARL EDWARDS IN INDIANA
Concord, N.C. (July 21, 2006) - Roush Fenway Racing up-and-comer Ricky Stenhouse Jr. is coming into his own in the ARCA RE/MAX Series. He's been leading the point standings since May following his first career stock car win at Kentucky but his love for open wheel racing has not faded. This week, prior to the "Berlin ARCA 200" at Berlin Raceway, Stenhouse will stop in Indiana to race Carl Edwards USAC Silver Crown car. Stenhouse will race the No. 199 Carl Edwards/R.E. Technologies car at the Terre Haute Action track on Wednesday then at O'Reilly Raceway Park (ORP) on Thursday. Why? Because he likes it.
"Its fun," said Stenhouse. "I like to race period. That's it, I want to race. Plus it never hurts to get more laps at ORP because hopefully some day I'll run a stock car there."
As for racing for teammate Edwards, it's nothing new to Stenhouse who has driven for the NASCAR Sprint Cup and Nationwide Series regular.
"It's pretty cool because (Edwards) has good stuff." Stenhouse continued, "I was driving for him before he was a teammate so it's cool. Plus they're leading the owner points in the USAC Silver Crown Series so hopefully we can keep them in the points lead. Last time we were at Terre Haute in the Silver Crown car it wasn't good. We got taken out on the first lap so hopefully we can make it better. We ran third at the first Silver Crown race this year at Manzanita which is a half-mile like Terre Haute so we should be good."
Stenhouse has made many laps at both Terre Haute and ORP so he's fully aware of some of the challenges that each track presents.
"Early on the sun will be an issue at Terre Haute," said the Olive Branch, Miss.-native. "It's in your face going down the back straight and you can't see at all so that will be difficult. The last couple races I've run there, a Sprint car and the last Silver Crown race I ran, the dust was just terrible so just being able to see will be a challenge.
"ORP is just a fun track to race at. I think my limited ARCA experience will help me there since its pavement. I try not to run blowers in the stock car so I get used to the heat. I think 100 laps will seem kind of short to me know. I've learned how to save the tires so I should be better there than last year."
Has his ARCA RE/MAX Series experience helped him in his open wheel efforts? Stenhouse thinks so stating, "When I ran open wheel last year I was tensed up driving on pavement for some reason so I've gotten a lot more relaxed driving on pavement and I think that's going to help. When we went and tested Memphis in the Silver Crown car I was a lot more relaxed and we were pretty good. Learning how to get on and off the brakes better will help me too."
Stenhouse will test the No. 99 ARCA RE/MAX Ford at Nashville Superspeedway on Tuesday, July 22 before heading to Indiana. Following his back-to-back Silver Crown starts, Stenhouse will travel to Berlin Raceway for Saturday's ARCA event where he hopes to increase his points lead over Scott Speed (he currently has a 65 point lead) and add to his win column.
