Passmore Excited about New Race Track and Success Streak: For the first time in the 2004 ARCA RE/MAX Series season, the competitors will race on a track which they have not yet visited, the Gateway International Raceway near St. Louis, Missouri. This 1.25-mile flat oval is known to be a tricky race track to master which is why the Christi Passmore Racing team spent an entire day last month testing the track in preparation for this weekend's Shop & Save 150.
"Gateway is one of those race tracks that you hear a lot about from competitors in other racing series who have competed there," said Passmore. "It is known as a difficult track to get around because of the flat corners and long straight-aways. The race cars carry a lot of speed into the corners, then it becomes like a short track with the amount of brake you need to use. When we tested at Gateway back before the Kansas race, I think it really helped us to get a feel for how we need to tackle qualifying and the race when we get back there this weekend. The biggest change between our test and the race, I think, will be the weather. We enjoyed a 75 degree test day and we will be racing here in the heat of the summer. I'm sure that will change the track and therefore change some of how we attack the setups. But I know I learned a lot about the track that hopefully will help me to secure a top five finish this weekend."
While Passmore's 2004 season did not start out with the consistent top five and top ten finishes she was expecting, her performance of recent weeks has turned that around and boosted her into the top ten in the championship points race. Last weekend's event at the Kentucky Speedway gave Passmore her fifth top ten finish of the season and moved her to within 30 points of the eighth place spot in the ARCA RE/MAX Series Championship points standings.
"It feels good to be turning this season around as far as finishes go," said Passmore. "We had a lot of really strong runs early in the season, but couldn't seem to hold onto enough luck in order to be there at the finish. Lately we have gotten some of that luck back and started securing those top ten and top five finishes that we were looking for this season. We know we should probably be a lot higher in the point's race right now, but we have been quietly moving through the top ten and I hope we can continue that trend this weekend."
The Shop & Save 150 will take the green flag at 9:00pm ET on Friday, July 16. The race can be seen Live on Speed Channel.
