ARCA RE/MAX Series test wraps up with Gerhart fastest.
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla., (Dec. 22, 2002) -- ARCA RE/MAX Series teams concluded their test session two hours early on Sunday after completing all of their work in preparation for the Feb. 8 Advance Discount Auto Parts 200 at Daytona International Speedway.
Bobby Gerhart, who won the Advance Discount Auto Parts in 1999 and 2002, posted the fastest speed of the day with a lap of 184.453 mph in his No. 5 Pontiac. Rounding out the top five was Matt Hagans (182.919), Bob Strait (182.3450, Jeremy Clements (182.183) and Christi Passmore (181.316).
Gerhart, a native of Lebanon, Penn., says the Pontiac he tested this weekend is excellent in race trim and is leaning toward using this car in the season opener as opposed to the Pontiac that he raced to victory in the 2002 Advance Discount Auto Parts 200.
He plans to make his final decision between the two Pontiacs after another test session.
"I believe the placement on a couple of critical areas make (this Pontiac) a better package to race with," Gerhart said. "That's what it ultimately takes at Daytona to win. You have to have a real good handling race car. I understand there's such a big emphasis on the aero stuff today, but ultimately three or four laps into a deal, you've got to race the car."
Next up at the Speedway is go-kart events from the World Karting Association on Dec. 26-30.
Tickets for the WKA events and Speedweeks 2003 events are available online at www.daytonainternationalspeedway.com or by calling the Speedway ticket office at (386) 253-7223.
