TOP-10 AT POCONO PROPELS TOWNLEY TO SIXTH IN POINTS; LOOKS TO CARRY THE MOMENTUM TO NASHVILLE
CONCORD, NC (8/5/08) John Wes Townley, driver of the No. 09 Zaxby's/SPS/BB&T/Saxon Group Ford overcame a mid-pack qualifying effort and the "Big One" to bring home a ninth-place finish in the Pennsylvania ARCA 200 at Pocono Raceway.
The SunTrust Rookie of the year contender started the 200-mile, rain- delayed event in the 14th starting position and ran consistently in the top- 15 for most of the day. At lap 48, Townley brought the No. 09 machine down pit road for the final stop of the day for tires and fuel. Solid pit work and a few late-race cautions helped the Zaxby's Racing team capitalize on track position and ultimately bring home his second consecutive top-10 finish.
This 9th place finish marked Townley's fifth top-10 and 10th top-15 of the season. The effort has propelled the 18-year-old Watkinsville, GA native to sixth in the 2008 ARCA RE/MAX Series Championship point standings with 2635 points, just 190 points out of fifth.
Next up for RAB Racing with Brack Maggard is the Toyota ARCA 150 at Nashville Superspeedway where Townley hopes to carry his momentum forward. This race marks the 14th stop of the 21 race schedule and the sixth appearance for RAB Racing at the 1.33-mile track since 2004.
The team successfully attended the open ARCA test in July in preparation for this weekend's event. The No. 09 machine was unofficially 8th quickest with a lap time of 30.250 seconds and a speed of 158.281mph.
"I am very excited about running at Nashville this weekend, stated John Wes Townley. We had a successful test back in July and I've had several good runs in my late model at the Music City Motorplex across town. Hopefully some of that good karma will carry over to the speedway and I can bring home a guitar."
In addition to his duties behind the wheel of the No. 09 RAB Racing Ford, Townley will pilot Roush-Fenway's No. 09 Zaxby's Ford F-150 in the Toyota Tundra 200 at Nashville Superspeedway on Saturday, August 9. Race coverage for both events will be televised live on Speed starting at 4:30 p.m.
