Kyle Petty Charity Ride gives fans the opportunity to join in the excitement of the 2002 journey.
Ebay auction offers one-of-a-kind experiences and collectibles to raise money for Victory Junction Gang Camp.
(Concord, NC - June 18, 2002) - The 8th Annual Kyle Petty Charity Ride Across America is gearing up to travel cross-country next week. More than 250 motorcycle enthusiasts and NASCAR stars will travel 3,419 miles over eight days through 13 states to raise money for children's charities. But fans that are not traveling with this year's caravan of motorcycles or don't live near the ride's route now have an opportunity to be part of the excitement.
On June 18th, the Kyle Petty Charity Ride Across America will launch an eBay auction to raise money and awareness for the Victory Junction Gang Camp. Race fans, well-wishers, collectors and thrill-seekers can log onto to ebay.com to bid on unique collectibles and one-of-a-kind interactive experiences from the Kyle Petty Charity Ride, Petty Enterprises and their sponsors.
"This is something we're very excited about," said Kyle Petty. "It's a way for anybody, anywhere to get involved. You don't have to join the ride if your schedule won't allow or you're just not a motorcycle rider. You can visit this site and bid on some rare collectibles and experiences you just can't find anywhere else. The proceeds go to The Victory Junction Gang Camp, so it's a win-win situation for everybody involved."
The first item to be auctioned off by the charity ride is the Petty Enterprises' Fantasy Racing Trip. The winning bidder and guest will receive a VIP Tour of Petty Enterprises race shop, a chance to meet Kyle and Richard Petty, have lunch at the Petty Condo above Turn 1 at Lowe's Motor Speedway and ride shotgun with Kyle Petty for three laps on the 1.5-mile oval. Finally, the winning bidder and guest will jump behind the wheel of a Winston Cup-style stock car and drive eight laps on their own at Richard Petty Driving Experience.
Additionally, Motor Racing Network (MRN) is donating a spot as an honorary pit reporter at an upcoming NASCAR Winston Cup race. The winning bidder will get a behind-the-scenes look at an MRN broadcast of a Winston Cup race and have the opportunity to get involved in driver interviews.
Another highlight of the Kyle Petty Charity Ride auction is a motorcycle that is traveling with the charity ride, collecting autographs from some of the most famous athletes from a variety of sports. San Francisco Giants left fielder Barry Bonds and racing legend Mario Andretti are scheduled to be the first two to put their signature on the bike. Fans can check out the <members.ebay.com/aboutme/pettyauction/> site throughout the next few weeks for updates on who has signed the bike and when it will go up for auction.
The auction's benefactor, the Victory Junction Gang Camp, is the national charity of the Kyle Petty Charity Ride Across America. Kyle and his wife Pattie founded the camp in 2000 in honor of their son Adam, who was tragically killed in a racing accident. The camp is a planned extension of the Hole in the Wall Gang Camps founded by actor Paul Newman. The camp's purpose is to enrich the lives of children with chronic or life-threatening illnesses by creating camping experiences that are memorable, empowering and fun. Campers will be among peers who face same or similar illness, so they can share stories and build friendships while participating in activities such as boating, swimming, horseback riding and more.
"We saw one of the camps in Florida and just knew we had to bring this experience to North Carolina," said Petty. "These kids here have all the medical attention they need, but just as important, they are allowed to have fun and be kids. It's a great feeling when you see a kid forget, even for a moment, the struggles he or she faces daily."
