For Kimmel, 'There's No Place like Kansas'
Kansas City, KS (April 25, 2007)-All drivers have a favorite race track or one that they are able to find a little more success on. For Eight-time ARCA RE/MAX Series Champion, Frank Kimmel, Kansas Speedway has to be pretty high on his list of favorites. As you look over his record at the 1.5-mile speedway, you can't help but notice that there are no numbers greater than five in either the start or finish columns, dating back to the inaugural NASCAR Winston West race at the speedway in 2001 that Kimmel competed in.
In seven starts at the speedway, Kimmel has earned two poles, three wins and seven top-three finishes. Kimmel's most recent win at the speedway came last season under rather unique circumstances. Kimmel competed the night before the first practice session, in the third IROC race of the season on the road course at Daytona International Speedway. With the IROC race not taking the checkered flag until nearly midnight and practice scheduled for 8:00am the next morning at Kansas, Kimmel flew through the night to arrive in time for the session. With next to no sleep, Kimmel was able to get a solid session of practice in before qualifying fifth for the race and ultimately making his way to victory lane the following day.
"That was quite a whirlwind weekend last year," said Kimmel. "I had spent the week before the race in Daytona with the IROC cars for the road race and we got such a late start that night for the race. But we flew all night and made it to Kansas -- we ended up having a pretty good weekend all the way around. I have always enjoyed the Kansas Speedway, since the first race they hosted. We seem to run real well here each year and I hope to be able to keep the streak of top-three finishes alive here this weekend."
The Pork Racing team is bringing the same car that took them to victory lane last year at Kansas, affectionately known as 'Bacon'. With Kimmel celebrating his birthday on Monday, he hopes 'Bacon' will get him his first win of 2007 to celebrate too. He will be making his 331st career ARCA RE/MAX Series start this weekend and eighth career start at Kansas Speedway. Kimmel is currently second in ARCA RE/MAX Series championship points, only 60 points behind the leader, Justin Allgaier.
The Kansas Lottery $150 Grand is scheduled to take the green flag at 5:00pm ET on Friday, April 27. The race will be televised live on SPEED.
