KIMMEL BACKS UP WIN WITH SECOND PLACE FINISH AT KENTUCKY
Sparta, KY (July 9, 2006) -- Frank Kimmel and his Pork Racing team entered Friday night's WLWT-Channel 5 150 at the Kentucky Speedway with a tremendous amount of momentum following their win from the previous weekend at the Kansas Speedway. With Kimmel's track record at Kentucky, the seven-time ARCA RE/MAX Series Champion was a favorite to win his fourth race at the 1.5-mile speedway.
Kimmel qualified in the fifth position for the event and when the green flag flew on the event he quickly moved his way up to the second position behind eventual race winner, Brad Coleman. Toward the end of the first green flag run, Kimmel began to experience at tight condition in his Pork Ford Fusion forcing him to fall to the fourth position. But as the lead cars began making their pit stops under the green flag, Kimmel stayed on the race track in order to lead a lap and receive five bonus points, but in turn was able to catch a caution flag when another car stalled on the back stretch. Kimmel was able to come to the attention of his pit crew for fresh tires and fuel along with trapping some of the other top competitors on the tail of the lead lap for the lap 67 restart.
As the field took the green flag, Kimmel fell to the second position for the first couple laps as the tire pressure in his car built up allowing him to make the pass back o the lead. Kimmel would lead the next 13 laps until a controversial restart on lap 87 would mix up the front runners heading to the final laps of the event. Kimmel would once again fall to the second position and remain there to the checkered flag.
"We had an awesome race car tonight, but the bottom line was that we just got beat by a stronger car tonight," said Kimmel. "Bill (Kimmel) kept asking me all night what he could do to the car to make me better and there really was nothing that he could do for me, the car was perfect, a little tight in turns one and two all night, but I could drive it to the bottom of the race track and just about hold the throttle down through the turns. But Brad (Coleman) was just a rocket tonight. On those last two restarts, I tried to stay with him and then we would get to the backstretch and he could pull away from me by a couple car lengths."
"The restart with 11 laps to go was definitely strange," said Kimmel. 'I thought I got a good start and got through the gears okay, but then I look to my outside and I'm getting passed. That doesn't really make much sense, but I know the ARCA officials will take a look at that and make the call they feel is appropriate. It seemed to me that in order for that to happen, somebody had to have started early."
With his second place finish, Kimmel was able to continue moving closer to the ARCA RE/MAX Series point lead as he continues to hold the second place position but is now only 55 points behind leader Bobby Gerhart. The next event on the ARCA RE/MAX Series schedule will take place on Saturday, July 15 at the Berlin Raceway in Marne, Michigan. The green flag is scheduled for 8:30pm ET.
