From IROC to ARCA, Kimmel Looking at Busy Weekend: After a well-deserved weekend off, Frank Kimmel will take on a busy schedule of racing this week as he heads to Daytona International Speedway for Race Three of the IROC Series on Thursday evening before jetting to the Kansas Speedway where practice begins early Friday morning for the ARCA RE/MAX Series cars. Kimmel spent three days last week preparing for the IROC event during the three-day practice session which allowed Kimmel to take his first laps around the 3.56-mile road course.
"The test session went really well, but I don't feel like I was very good at road racing," said Kimmel. "I definitely made improvements as the sessions went on although I know I won't get anywhere near as good as the road course racers. I have to say that the grounds-keepers at Daytona are probably not too happy with me as I did take a couple off-road excursions during the practice sessions."
Kimmel is no stranger to the Kansas Speedway where he has earned one win in ARCA RE/MAX Series competition along with winning the inaugural race at the speedway in 2001 behind the wheel of a NASCAR Winston West Series car. Kimmel has also never started or finished an event at the 1.5-mile speedway outside of the top-three in his six starts at the speedway.
"I always like coming back to the Kansas Speedway," said Kimmel. "Not only for the fact that we run well here, but because it is such a great facility. The fans are incredible and just so supportive of the racers. I also have a soft spot for Kansas because I won the first race they held at the track and that is a really special memory. We are bringing 'Kenseth' as our primary car this weekend and hopefully the trip to Kansas will help bring some of our luck back this season."
Kimmel is currently second in ARCA RE/MAX Series Championship points standings, 120 points behind leader Bobby Gerhart. Kimmel is also currently fifth in IROC points with two races remaining in the 2006 Championship. Race Three of the IROC Series will take place Thursday, June 29 at 10:00pm ET and will be televised live on Speed. The Kansas Lottery $200 Grand ARCA RE/MAX Series event will take place on Saturday, July 1 at 4:45pm and will be televised on Speed on Sunday, July 2 at 3:00pm.
