Was there a full moon hiding Saturday night at Flat Rock Speedway? The evening was punctuated with several hard crashes. The tow vehicles were kept busy throughout the night and competed with the PTS truck for the most laps run all evening. Fortunately there were no injuries except many wrecked race cars. There were at least six red flags thrown during the course of the evening to remove the wrecked vehicles.
A hard crash into the turn two gate opening by Bryan Ausmus brought out the first red flag during the street stock "B" division dash. Ausmus, fast qualifier in the B division, was out for the remainder of the evening.
The first of two incidents in the SLM first heat occurred when Mike Jaynes hit the turn one wall, breaking the oil cooler which ended his night. Several laps later rookie Robbie Loving slammed head on into the backstretch wall. Loving and his crew worked hard and he was able to race the feature minus the front end body work. Chris Benson slammed into the third turn wall during the second SLM heat but was able to make repairs for the feature.
Rookie David Blair tangled with another car during the street stock third heat. Apparently something broke on Blair's car because the car made an abrupt right hand turn into the wall head on. Obviously he was done for the night.
Stan Yee Jr looked like he was on the way to his first feature win of the season in the SLM 35-lap feature, but was bested by a determined Rick Knowles. Yee Jr led the first 20 laps before Knowles was finally able to get around him on the outside. A blown power steering hose halted Yee Jr's bid for the feature last week after leading the first 30 laps. Knowles has won three of the four races run at Flat Rock this year.
Brian Norton and Ron Allen again put on a thrilling show for the fans in the street stock A main. After the pair dispensed with early leader Skip Kissell on lap 10 they ran nose to tail and side-by-side for the remainder of the race. Norton held off Allen for his second win of the season. The street stock B and C mains were relatively quiet with the only caution thrown for a spin in the B main. Earl Roth Jr won the B main from the pole over Rich Able. Likewise, Ed Wettlaufer won the C main from the pole.
Kenny Ahlgren led the entire 50-lap feature after posting a new track record, 20.438 seconds, during qualifying. The 20-car field put on an exciting race as usual. You had to be there to fully appreciate the precision driving and near misses at the intersection.
