Returning to Atlanta, Howard shoots for improvement

Hampton, GA (3-4-02) -- Shelby Howard is making a return visit to one of the few tracks on the ARCA RE/MAX circuit that he's been to before. He and the CIMCO Racing crew are headed back to Atlanta Motor Speedway where they finished out the 2001 season.

Howard started 13th in the season finale last year at Atlanta. Unfortunately, he experienced a broken valve spring barely halfway through the race, forcing him behind the wall and eventually winding up with a 30th place finish.

"The motor started slowing down and I was backing through the field," Howard said. "We didn't know what was wrong, but we knew it wouldn't make it the rest of the way. I had worked my way up to the leaders a couple of times but our slow pit stops kept hurting our chances. We're a young team, but we probably would've had a top ten finish if it hadn't been for the valve problem," stated Howard.

The team will have associate sponsors Mack Trucks and Shepherd Insurance featured on the #64 car, but they are currently seeking marketing partners for the remainder of the season.

Howard feels comfortable going back to the track even though he wasn't able to make it for the open test session a couple of weeks ago.

"Atlanta is a smooth track. It's fast and it should be a great race," exclaimed Howard. "We wanted to get down there to test, but the car wasn't quite ready." Howard continued, "We should have a good race car. It's the same car we took last year, but we've made a few changes to it, especially to the nose. We should be in great shape."

Howard hopes to score his third career top ten finish and his first on a superspeedway, boosting the rookie of the year's position in the point standings.

"This is only my fourth start on a big track, but if we have a decent qualifying run and have some good pit stops, we think we can come home with a top ten finish," stated Howard.

The field will roll off the grid for the Pork The Other White Meat 400 from Atlanta Motor Speedway on Saturday, March 9 at 1 p.m. ET. Hear live coverage on PRN starting at 12:30 p.m. The race will be televised on Monday, March 11 at 8 p.m. on Speed Channel.

QUICK FACTS: This will be Shelby's 7th career ARCA RE/MAX
start. He has an average starting position of 13.8.

DRIVER APPEARANCE: Shelby will be participating in an autograph session at the track on Friday, March 8 from 3-4 pm ET.
