Jeff Speakman Spoke in Shady Bowl ARCA Trucks by Don Radebaugh

DeGraff, OH, - August 21, 1999 - When Jeff Speakman speaks, the drivers of the Lincoln Welders Truck Series listen. Speakman spoke Saturday night at Shady Bowl Speedway with a convincing victory in the 50 lap main event holding off charges from David Clay and John Toth in the end to score his first career ARCA Truck victory. In doing so, Speakman became the seventh different winner after ten events in the new touring series. The Piqua, Ohio driver cashed in big with a $2,400 payday that included the Hoosier Tire Pole award, the Revenge Racing Bodies Pole-Win award as well as the Cloyes Gear & Product halfway leader honors. Clay followed closely in second with Toth in third ahead of Jeff Wichmann and Dave Reeb to complete the top five. "What can I say," said Speakman in victory lane. "We had a near perfect day, and not a bad weekend overall with a third place finish last night at Winchester. We were lucky enough to hit the set-up here without a lot of chasin’ around. We were fast right off the trailer so we were able to keep ahead of the game. Shady Bowl can be a handful so the handle is critical here. This win was real important to us because we consider ‘the Bowl’ our home track. This is just great though. We might as well go ahead and win some more while were on a roll." For Speakman, the checkered flag came none too soon as in a post race inspection it was revealed that the winner had an oil pump belt that was shredding fast. Robbin Slaughter, in his Carmen Vacuum Sales-Ed & Company Ford, started on the pole through a five car inversion and led the first 15 laps until a trip pitside to change a right front tire sent the Columbus, Ohio driver deep into the running order. Speakman, who started fifth, had already worked his way into second when Slaughter’s tire troubles began, and assumed the lead when the former leader drove pitside for service. >From there, Clay and Toth dogged the eventual winner perpetually but couldn’t muster the necessary steam to make the pass before the checkered flag fell. Tully Esterline steered the Spangler Candy Chevy home in sixth in front of veteran Bobby Marvin in seventh. Slaughter, who battled back to finish eighth, was the last car on the lead lap. Todd Braun and Johnny Witham finished out the top ten. Toth received the Ed & Company Hard Charger award for advancing the most positions, from 14th to third and Witham won the Hawk Best Brake of the Race award. Heats were won by Troy Marciniak and Bill Withers. The ARCA Lincoln Welders Truck Series will next appear on the clay at Crystal Motor Speedway in Crystal, Michigan this Saturday night, August 28th.
