PICKERINGTON, Ohio (June 17, 2003) -- The Southern Indiana burg of Haubstadt will earn the distinction of being the first town in its area to host an AMA Progressive Insurance U.S. Flat Track Championship race. On Saturday, June 21, Tri-State Speedway in Haubstadt (about 16 miles north of Evansville) will be the site of round seven of the 18-race series. Tri-State Speedway is a high-banked, clay oval quarter-mile-length short track. The combination of the high-banking, the clay, all inside the tight confines of a short track should produce exciting racing.

Chris Carr leads the championship coming into this weekend's race. Carr, 36, from Fleetwood, Pa., is shooting to earn his fifth AMA Grand National title. He is the all-time wins leader among active riders and is the only multi-time winner so far this season. The odds are even more in Carr's favor this weekend since both of his wins this season came on short tracks.

This could be an historic race. Carr is tied with racing legends Kenny Roberts and Steve Eklund as the leading AMA Short Track National winners in the history of the series with five wins each. If Carr wins Saturday he will become the all-time AMA wins leader in the short-track category.

"It's an honor to be talked about in the same sentence with those guys," Carr said of Roberts and Eklund. "I know Kenny didn't run as many short track nationals in his career as I have, but it's still an honor to be counted among those guys."

Carr saw the track last week during a promotional tour he did in Evansville. "It's a racy little short track," he said. "Cornering is going to be very important there. It's different from the other short tracks we've raced on this year. It's a real point-and-shoot circuit."

Carrying serious momentum into Haubstadt is former champ Joe Kopp. The veteran from Washington State is coming off a victory last weekend in Granite City, Ill., and moved into second in the series standings just 16 points behind Carr. Kopp is always competitive on short tracks, but is looking for his first national victory on a small circuit.

Johnny Murphree is one of the young up-and-comers in the series. The California native is still very much in the thick of the championship hunt, just three points out of second in the series standings. Like Kopp, Murphree is hoping to win his first short-track national. He was runner-up to Carr at the Daytona Beach, Fla. and Chillicothe, Ohio short-track nationals earlier this season, so he's primed to win his first.

Racing legend Jay Springsteen is entered in this weekend's race and could join Carr, Eklund and Roberts atop the all-time AMA Short Track National wins list. "Springer" has four-career wins on the short tracks, but hasn't won on the small circuits since taking victory at the San Jose, Calif. Short Track National in 1985.
