Reed/Carmichael duel heats up after aggressive pass.

AURORA, IL. (April 29, 2003) - Yamaha's Chad Reed made a stand last Saturday night in Salt Lake City when he made an aggressive block pass on Honda's Ricky Carmichael and rode away to his eighth victory of the season. The aggressive move sent Carmichael to the ground; the two-time defending 250cc AMA Supercross Series champion remounted in sixth place to finish second. Tickets are still available for this classic showdown at www.unlvtickets.com, www.sxgp.com and Ticketmaster. A press conference will be held with the top three riders 125 and 250 competition at Sam Boyd Stadium in Las Vegas on Friday, May 2 from Noon-2:00 p.m.

"No matter what they (Yamaha) say, they have to make something happen," said Carmichael on Reed's pass. "I need to stay out of trouble; I have something to protect. The only thing he can do is take me out if he wants the championship."

"I made an aggressive pass and he fell down," said Reed. "Ricky seems pissed about it but that's his deal."

The victory for Reed - his sixth consecutive - gave him the lead for the most wins on the season (8) over Carmichael, who has seven. Heading into Las Vegas, Reed trails Carmichael by 10 points. If Reed wins Carmichael needs to finish in fifth place to win the title. If Reed wins and Carmichael finishes sixth, they would be tied in points, and per AMA rules, Reed would be the champion because he has more race wins.

This is the third time in the sport's history that the 250cc championship has gone down to the final round at Las Vegas' Sam Boyd Stadium.

Kawasaki's 125cc Western Regional AMA Supercross Series champion James Stewart will take on the best riders from the 125cc Eastern Regional AMA Supercross Series in the Dave Coombs Sr. East/West Shootout.

The final round of THQ World Supercross/AMA Supercross Series will air on ABC's Wide World of Sports Sunday, May 4 at 2:00-3:00 p.m. EST/3:00-4:00 p.m. PST.
