Beach Leads the AMA Pro SuperSport Field at Road America Following Fast Day One Qualifying Session
ELKHART LAKE, Wis. (June 4, 2010) - JD Beach came off of last weekend's thrilling AMA Pro Flat Track Springfield TT victory in the Motorcycle-Superstore.com Pro Singles division to get on the AMA Pro SuperSport provisional pole for this weekend's Suzuki SuperBike Doubleheader at Road America in Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin.
"I've been doing this for a few years so now it's not too hard, but before it used to be pretty hard," Beach commented on switching between his AMA Pro Flat Track and AMA Pro Road Racing machines. "I felt myself making some mistakes today. Going into the fast turns, I tried to back it in too much. It was fun until I couldn't go faster, so I came in and changed some stuff and got the bike working better. This track is a lot of fun. Because of the rain today it was good and slick so I think that might have helped some too."
The 2008 Red Bull MotoGP Rookies Cup Champion turned a laptime of 2:24.409 (100.857 mph) around the historic 4.05-mile circuit aboard his No. 73 Rockwall Performance Yamaha YZF-R6.
"I guess because the track is so big I didn't get a chance to draft with anybody," Beach continued. "I watched the Daytona SportBike guys and they got down to a '22 I think so that's my goal. I want to beat the SuperSport guys but my goal is to be racing in SportBike so whenever I go out, I try to beat their times."
Second fastest in the qualifying session was Huntley Nash and the No. 75 Yamaha YZF-R6 with a time of 2:25.280 (100.309 mph). Earlier in the day, Nash led the wet practice session with a time of 2:35.600 (93.655 mph).
Third fastest was Tomas Puerta aboard the No. 12 Yamaha YZF-R6, who posted a time of 2:25.395 (100.229 mph). Final qualifying for SuperSport begins at 9:20 a.m. local time tomorrow, with an open grid fan walk kicking off at 12:30 p.m. and race one of the weekend's doubleheader at Road America scheduled for 1:30 p.m. Sunday will see a rider autograph session at 10:50 a.m., a second fan grid walk at 11:30 a.m. and race two of SuperSport competition with another 1:30 p.m. start time. SPEED will be broadcasting highlights of both races in same-weekend coverage.
