AURORA, Ill. (November 30, 2001) - Clear Channel Entertainment's motor sports division announced today that the Racer X Gas Card will once again be presented at each round of the 2002 EA SPORTS Supercross Series. The Racer X Gas Card is worth $250 every Saturday and is meant to help privateer riders with travel expenses as they go from race to race.

Racer X Illustrated, the influential, cutting-edge motocross magazine, has been presenting the Racer X Gas Card bonus since 1999. "Our goal is to give something back to the riders on the circuit who need help the most," said Davey Coombs, editor-in-chief of Racer X as well as ESPN's pit reporter for EA SPORTS Supercross. "Initially we presented the $250 bonus to the highest-placing privateer in the 250 main event each Saturday night, but the definition of a privateer is always up for debate. So we settled on giving it to the third-place finisher in the 250cc last chance qualifier. That's the highest-placing rider in the program not to make it to the main event. We figured he's the guy who could use some extra gas money to make it to the next race the most."

Last year Racer X handed out a total of $3750 in gas money to the riders who did not qualify for the 250 main event. Jimmy Wilson, a privateer Yamaha rider from Michigan, had the somewhat dubious distinction of taking the bonus money seven times by missing the main event by one spot in almost half the races. "$250 probably wouldn't mean a lot to any factory rider who might earn the Racer X Gas Card, but I know how much it meant to Jimmy and his dad throughout the season," added Coombs.
