Spring Run, PA_ Local riders held their own as the AMA recognized champion bike and quad flattrack racers from six states Saturday at the Path Valley Speedway Park.

Craig Robinson of Ft. Loudon kicked off the feature events with a four-wheeler 2-stroke win in the AMA Northeast Nationals held Saturday and Sunday at the Path Valley Speedway Park. Saturday's Short Track events, sponsored by Action Motorsports of York, were the first of the three-leg events leading to the overall national championships that include also the TT or Tourist Trophy race and the Half-Mile features.

John Lewis V of Brandamore, a past amateur Grand National Champion on smaller bikes, won in both the 250 Modified and 450 Modified classes, and "Awesome" Austin Greenland of Spring Mills, last year's amateur TT Grand Champion, won in the 85 modified and 125 modified classes.

Among the winners from out of state, Path Valley's frequent visitor Bailey Spence of Rising Sun MD won the feature in 50cc Senior class. Among the youngest riders, Kenneth Venarchic of New Castle DE won both the 50cc oil injected feature and the 50cc Junior feature for those 4 to 7 years old.

Darin Ogden of Dillonvale OH won both the four-wheeler sportsman feature and the four-wheel four-stroke feature.

On two wheels, Patrick Jacobsen of Montgomery NY won the 85DTX feature and then won the 85 modified feature for 7 to 11 year olds.

The Pro Am races for 24 classes of bikes and quads included a Short Track set of features Saturday on the steeply banked Path Valley clay and the Tourist Trophy (TT) race Sunday on a more serpentine course with a jump, chicane and S-turn. The third leg of the Northeast Nationals is the Half-Mile that Two Wheel Promotions will host June 8 at the Williams Grove Speedway.

Scores from all three races will be combined for the overall Northeast National Champions who will represent the Northeast region at the AMA Progressive Insurance Grand Championships June 30 through July 5 at the Illinois State Fairgrounds in Springfield. For the eight premiere Northeast Nationals divisions, AMA Sports provides travel money in addition to the trophies and vanity plates won locally.

The Path Valley Speedway Park is located in Spring Run PA a mile north on PA Route 641 from the intersection with PA Route 75, halfway between Port Royal and Hagerstown. It is five miles east from the Willow Hill Exit 14 of the PA Turnpike. The new phone number at the track for promoter Ken Geesey is 717-349-7111. For information on the 2003 schedule and rules, race teams and fans can consult the website at www.pathvalley.com or they can email Two Wheel Promotions at twp@pathvalley.com.
