Minneapolis, Minn. - For the seventh-straight time in the 2001 season of EA SPORTS Supercross Presented by Speed Stick, Team Chevy Trucks Kawasaki's Ricky Carmichael, Havana, Fla., earned a victory in the 250cc class at the Metrodome. Seven-time supercross champion Jeremy McGrath, Encinitas, Calif., garnished second place. Team Suzuki's Travis Pastrana, Annapolis, Md., returned to the number-one position in 125cc season points standings with a dominate win, while Team Yamaha of Troy/Fox's Nathan Ramsey, who led the series coming into this event, went down in the first turn and started the race dead last.
It was another fast start for Carmichael as he won the $1,000 SFX.com Holeshot Award with Yamaha's Timmy Ferry, Largo, Fla., in tow. The real battle was for second place where Ferry, McGrath, and Team Honda/Universal Studio's Ezra Lusk would duke it out for the better half of 10 laps. McGrath, riding his Team Mazda/Yamaha, moved around Ferry then was passed by Lusk, who would later crash out of position, giving the lead back to McGrath. McGrath finished second and Mike LaRocco was third.
"David (Vuillemin) was right on me and going fast," said Carmichael. "I started to pull away after he fell. The lappers were horrible here tonight and almost caused me to crash a few times. I am going to try my heart out for the rest of the series and we'll see what happens."
In the 125cc Eastern Regional Supercross event, KTM's Kelly Smith, Luddington, Mich., earned the $500 SFX.com Holeshot Award but didn't stay up front for long as Pastrana, who dashed into the first turn one wheel behind Smith, moved into first. Pastrana would ride the rest of the race in competition with no one but himself, earning his fourth win on the season, which moved him into the series points lead. It was a great night for Team Yamaha of Troy/Fox-backed Nick Wey as he finished a season best second place. Team Pro Circuit/SplitFire/Kawasaki's Mike Brown, Piney Flats, Tenn., finished third.
"I was expecting a close race out there, but everyone went down in the first turn," said Pastrana. "I have never been out front in supercross, so I am really excited about this. I set out to have a lot of fun and that is what I did."
Kyle Olsen, Tekamah, Neb., won the KTM Junior Supercross Challenge by two seconds over David Butler, Canada, and Frankie Workman, Silver Lake, Kan., who finished second and third respectively. The KTM Junior Supercross Challenge is part of the halftime festivities at each round of EA SPORTS Supercross.
