Super Star Stewart set to Tie McGrath's Record in Minneapolis

AURORA, Ill. (February 16, 2004) - Team Kawasaki's James 'Bubba' Stewart, who became the first African-American to win a 125cc THQ AMA Western Regional Supercross Series championship, can tie seven-time supercross champion Jeremy McGrath's all-time 125cc supercross win record (13) this weekend in the Metrodome.

"I think every rider would like to be thought of in the same light as Jeremy McGrath," said Stewart. "He's the best there has ever been and the fact that I have the opportunity to put my name alongside his in the record books is an honor for me. He's the best supercross rider the sport has ever seen and I look forward to chasing all of his 250 records as well."

Stewart, 18, of Haines City, Fla., won the opening round of 125cc Eastern Regional THQ AMA Supercross Series competition at Houston's Reliant Stadium, leading 13 of the 15 laps. In racing to the victory, Stewart's fastest lap time of 52.9 was nearly two seconds faster than his competitors.

Stewart's race for the championship this season contains another record tying accolade. If Stewart wins the THQ AMA Eastern Regional Supercross Series championship, he will become the second rider in AMA Supercross history to win 125cc Eastern and Western THQ AMA Supercross Series championships. Ernesto Fonseca won the Eastern regional championship in 1999 and the Western regional championship in 2001.
