Smith Holds Off Carr For Municipal Stadium Hot Shoe Victory
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla., (March 4, 2004) -- Bryan Smith opened a big lead early and then held off a strong late-race charge by Chris Carr to win the 15-lap AMA Hot Shoe Series race at Municipal Stadium Wednesday night. Joe Kopp took third.
Smith, who hails from the flat track hotbed of Flint, Mich., took over on the second lap from early leader Kopp. He proceeded to pull out a three second lead on his Docs Harley-Davidson sponsored Rotax, before defending AMA Grand National champ Carr made a determined rally late in the race.
"I didn't know who it was at first," said Smith of the charging Carr. "When I saw who it was I started getting real nervous."
Smith had just enough in reserve to hold off Carr to the checkered flag. Carr said he needed a few more laps to catch young Smith.
"I was hoping we'd have a 25 lapper like we're going to have tomorrow night," Carr said. "We put a little dent in his lead, but we'll just have to come out and try again tomorrow night. I'm looking forward to the challenge."
Kopp, another former AMA Grand National Champion, finished third after a mid-race battle with Carr. Ken Coolbeth and Jake Johnson rounded out the top five finishers.
The opening round of the AMA Progressive Insurance Flat Track Championship comes to Municipal Stadium Thursday night. Carr is the defending winner of the event. Jay Springsteen is slated to ride after two days of vintage racing at Daytona International Speedway.
