Miguel Duhamel will be replacing the injured Toni Elias for Honda Gresini Racing at the US Grand Prix of the FIM Road Racing World Championship Grand Prix (MotoGP) to take place at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca on July 22nd.
Duhamel is a 39 year-old rider from Lasalle, Quebec, Canada who now lives in Las Vegas, Nevada in the USA. The winner of AMA titles in the Formula Xtreme class (2004, '05) and has finished in the top-10 in points the AMA Superbike with victories in the premier USA road racing series. The French-Canadian rider has had experience in the Contitnental Circus in 1992 racing with Yamaha in 500cc (MotoGP today).
"Duhamel is an experienced rider," said team owner Fausto Gresini, "he knows the Laguna Seca track very well and we think it is a great opportunity for an American rider to race in this important event for the media and the spectators. Duhamel will race in both the MotoGP and AMA races on Sunday at Laguna, he is enthusiastic about this challenge."
Again this year, Duhamel is a top contender in AMA Superbike and currently sits fourth in the standings. He will be the oldest racer competing in the US Grand Prix this July but on a circuit he knows like the back of his hand due to his years of experience.
Duhamel will take the place of the Spaniard, who fractured his femur during free practice at Assen last week.
However, on the German Grand Prix, Elias position will be filled with a young Italian, 22 year-old Michel Fabrizio will have the Gresini seat.
Elias continues his recovery after leaving the hospital and plans to return either at Brno - the round after Laguna Seca - on August 19th, or at Misano on September 2nd.
