Du Quoin'S Magic Mile hosts AMA Progressive Insurance U.S. Flat Track Championship season finale.

PICKERINGTON, Ohio -- The Du Quoin (Ill.) State Fairgrounds Mile will play host to the final round of the 2002 AMA Progressive Insurance U.S. Flat Track Championship this Saturday, Sept. 28. The final chapter will be written at Du Quoin on a season that has been one of the most memorable in AMA Flat Track history. From Richard Winsett's surprise win at Daytona Beach's Municipal Stadium in March, to the Hayden brother's, Nicky, Tommy and Roger Lee, becoming the first trio of brothers to fill a podium at an AMA National in the Springfield (Ill.) Short Track National in May. And from the amazing parity the season has witnessed this year with 13 winners, to the championship performance turned in by Chris Carr, who became only the third rider in series history to win four AMA Grand National Championships.

Du Quoin will have added significance this year since it may be the last time fans here in America will be able to watch Nicky Hayden compete in an AMA National for a quite a while. Hayden, the 2002 AMA Chevy Trucks U.S. Superbike Champion, recently signed with Honda to race in the World Championship Motorcycle Grand Prix Championships next year. Hayden, 21, of Owensboro, Ky., comes to Du Quoin in a quest to win the very rare AMA Grand Slam ? marked by victories on a short-track, TT, mile, half-mile and road-race circuits. If Hayden manages to win Saturday, he would become only the fifth rider in AMA racing history to complete the Slam.

Newly-crowned champ Chris Carr also comes to Du Quoin hungry for a win on the "Magic Mile." Du Quoin is one of the few tracks on the AMA Grand National circuit that Carr has not won. The winningest active rider in the series would love to add a Du Quoin trophy to his mantel.

"It's one of the tracks I haven't quite figured out yet," Carr admitted. "I've been close to winning there a handful of times. My mechanic Kenny Tolbert is working really hard to get my bike ready for this race so we hope that everything will come together for us. I know Nicky (Hayden) is coming to win the Grand Slam and I'm going to do everything I can to keep him from doing that. I want to give him an excuse to come and play with us in the future." Rich King, Kevin Atherton and Jay Springsteen are the three former Du Quoin winners slated to race this weekend. Du Quoin is one of the most historic venues in the series -- the track has hosted AMA Nationals dating back to the 1940s. Du Quoin will also host the final round of the Harley-Davidson Sportster Performance Series on Saturday.

Practice starts at 12 p.m., racing at 5 p.m. For additional information on the race call (217) 753-8866 or visit www.illinoismda.com.
