Quads overshadow Bikes in Path Valley AMA Racing.
Spring Run, PA_ With large fields and dramatic finishes the four-wheelers overshadowed the two wheelers in AMA District 6 racing Saturday at the Path Valley Speedway Park.
In the open 2-stroke feature Brian Riley of Gardners had a 10 yard lead over points leader Susan Parker of Lebanon going into the final lap. In turn two the riders encountered the rearmost four-wheeler. Parker went high and Riley slowed and then went inside and which let Parker have the lead and a few seconds later the win to stretch her points lead over Dane Delancey of Port Royal who finished fourth.
Riley came back in the four-wheeler Sportsman feature to wheel his #25 Honda ATV across the line several lengths ahead of Parker and a full field of quads. In the ATV 4-Stroke open feature Cory Buhrman of Upper Strasburg proved that experience counts as he beat ATV points leader Dan Mowers by about two lengths in three-wide racing. Buhrman also races weekly at Path Valley in the combined karts and quads Saturday afternoon races. Mowers led Buhrman by one point going into the nights AMA features, sponsored by M&S Honda-Suzuki and Action Motorsports.
The night's closest finish was in the 85cc Modified class for 12 to 15 year olds. Joey Parks of Hampstead MD won the heat race and started on the inside but R.J. Hart of Poolesville MD worked to the inside and the duo went foot to foot and wheel to wheel and the win by inches went to Hart, who was already the AMA points leader.
Another outstanding finish in the adult classes was the Sportsman feature that Shawn Baer of Mechanicsburg won a few feet ahead of John Lewis V of Brandamore, and "Awesome" Austin Greenland of Spring Mills won in 85cc modified to secure his points lead for another few weeks.
The AMA returns to Path Valley on August 31 and again Sept. 21 and Oct. 19 with racing for up to 19 classes and age groups in ATV quads and on motorcycles. The quads also race in non-AMA features every Saturday afternoon at Path Valley with the Burris karts.
John Winsett Sr. of Two Wheel Promotions, who finished second to Michael Keane in 40-plus racing, reported that his son John Winsett Jr. remains on life support and in a coma at the Univ. of MD hospital in Baltimore following a motorcycle racing crash July 4 at Frederick. Cards can be sent to: John Winsett Jr. PO Box 407 Bainbridge PA 17502.
