AMA U.S. Hillclimb Champ David Watson receives AMA Pro Racing Speed Channel Athlete of the Year nomination.

PICKERINGTON, Ohio -- David Watson, champion of both the 800cc and 540cc classes of the AMA U.S. Hillclimb Championship presented by Pace American Trailers, has been nominated for the 2002 AMA Pro Racing Speed Channel Athlete of the Year Award. Watson, 24, of Ludlow, Mass., had an exciting 2002 hillclimb season, narrowly winning the 840 championship by a single point over good friend and rival Tiger Strank, and also took home the title in the 540 class. Watson rode Hondas in both championships.

"This is awesome", said Watson, an eight-year pro who also was a double winner of both the 540 and 800 classes in 2000. "Earning this nomination is almost as good as winning the championships. Hillclimbing doesn't get the kind of recognition that the other series do, so it's really special to be put in the same category as the other AMA champs."

Watson scored top-three finishes in nine of the 12 rounds including two wins in the 840 class. The championship came down to a nail biter where he had to finish fifth or better at the season finale to secure the title. On his second run of the day, he nailed down fifth and won the 840 class by one point. Watson was even more impressive in the 540 class, taking top-three results in all but one round this season and earning three wins.

Watson is the first AMA Hillclimb racer to be nominated for the AMA Pro Racing Speed Channel Athlete of the Year Award since Paul Pinsonnault earned a nomination in 1995. The presentation of the AMA Pro Racing Speed Channel Athlete of the Year Award will take place at the AMA Pro Racing Awards Banquet on Saturday evening, Nov. 23, at the Venetian Resort Hotel Las Vegas -- home of the Guggenheim Museum's "Art of the Motorcycle" exhibit. The ceremonies will be televised on a special edition of Speed Channel's "Bike Week" The winner of the Athlete of the Year Award will be presented a commemorative Rolex watch.
