FOUNTAIN, Co.- 1-888-FASTLAP riders Opie Caylor and Brian Stokes finished 12th and 16th in Sunday's AMA Pro Racing Superstock race at Pikes Peak International Raceway.
Caylor started the race from the 11th position on the grid, but in the opening laps he worked his way into eighth on his 1-888-FASTLAP/Team EMGO Taiwan Suzuki GSX-R750. Caylor stayed in the top ten for the first half of the 20-lap race, until his rear tire began to lose traction. He managed to hang onto a 12th-place finish despite the difficulties with his tire.
"I knew going in that this track would be quite tough because I was struggling here last year. But we went way better than last year," commented Caylor. "Grant Matsushima made changes to the bike and we kept getting faster. There was a red flag at the end of the first lap. I got a better start the second time and by the end of the first lap I was up to eighth place. About halfway through the race, my rear tire started to slide going into and coming out of the corners. Everybody started gapping me. Unfortunately, I faded back to 12th.
"The temperatures were so hot during the weekend- the track temperature during the day was 115-125 degrees, so we based our setup on that. But with the rain and us being the last race of the day, the temperature was a lot cooler. The front straight was only about 80 degrees. We did the best we could with what we had. I'm looking forward to getting back up to the front at Road America."
Stokes, another 1-888-FASTLAP rider, finished the Superstock race in 16th on his Team Embry Suzuki GSX-R750. Earlier in the day, Stokes also ran in the 48-lap Superbike race. He qualified 30th but worked his way up to a 26th place finish.
"I was gridded in the fourth row for Superstock," said Stokes. "I got a really good start the first time. I got a great launch on the restart, but a terrible first lap. I lost the rear in one turn and lost about six places. I battled with Mike Ciccotto for six or seven laps, then he pulled a gap. Then at the end I caught Chris Ulrich, and he beat me by 3/10's of a second. It was a decent race. For being here the first time, it's not bad. I learned so much this weekend about things like sliding the bike and body position."
