PICKERINGTON, Ohio - Amateur dirt track racing is set to return to Daytona Bike Week in a big way, following today's announcement by AMA Sports of the 2004 AMA Winter Short Track Nationals.
The inaugural AMA Winter Short Track Nationals will run from February 27 through March 2, with five events in as many days at three venues.
Action will begin on Friday, February 27, at Orange County Raceway in Orlando, followed by two days of racing at Daytona Municipal Stadium on February 28-29 and another two events at Motorsports Mania of Ocala on March 1-2.
There will be a full slate of amateur classes at each venue, headlined by eight AMA Premier classes. In addition, selected classes for four-wheeled ATVs will be included at the Orlando and Ocala events.
The AMA's Premier amateur dirt track classes for 2004 are as follows:

"We are delighted to have this opportunity to work with the three promoters involved in this new series," said AMA Sports Director Douglas Neubauer, "and we owe a special debt of gratitude to International Speedway Corporation for its support and encouragement. For the first time in several years, AMA amateur racers will have a chance to kick off their season in Daytona and compete on the same track as the stars of the AMA Progressive Insurance Flat Track Series."
AMA Sports will recognize champions in all classes from the series,
based on points accumulation for the full five days of racing. Points
will be paid in each day's main events according to the following scale:
1st - 23
2nd - 19
3rd - 16
4th - 15
5th - 14
6th - 13
7th - 12
8th - 11
9th - 10
10th - 9
11th - 8
12th - 7
The top three finishers in each class will receive custom championship number plates from AMA Sports in addition to event awards from the individual race promoters.
Additionally, all Premier Class Champions from the AMA Winter Short Track Nationals will be eligible for AMA Dirt Track Grand Championship Travel Incentives. The 2004 AMA Grand Championships will be the highlight of the amateur racing season, and are scheduled for June 27 - July 4 in Springfield, Illinois.
