SMITH SUFFERS MISERY ON AMERICAN LE MANS SERIES RETURN

Guy Smith returned to American Le Mans Series race action yesterday (11 July) but it proved to be an unhappy return for the Yorkshireman who retired in the closing stages at the Miller Motorsports Park in Tooele near Salt Lake City in Utah.

The 35-year-old from Beverley, shared his Dyson Racing Lola Coupe Mazda with regular co-driver Chris Dyson who had qualified in third place on the 34-car starting grid.

Dyson was in third position overall before handing over the Castrol sponsored Lola to Smith with an hour to run in the 165-minute sportscar endurance race.

But with only 25-minutes to run, with Smith fourth but catching the third-placed car, Guy was forced to park the Lola.

"The engine lost power which is disappointing as a top-three podium finish was definitely achievable," reflected Guy who has started the race third in the championship standings.

"We have been making great progress with the Castrol Lola Mazda in recent races so it's disappointing to have this happen. We will now focus on the next race at Lime Rock which is Dyson racing's 'home' circuit -- a race Chris and I would love to win so we will be giving everything we have to try and make that happen."

The fifth round of the American Le Mans Series at Lime Rock in Lakeville, Connecticut, is staged on July 24.
