TRG drivers finish 2-6-15 in 2003 Porsche World Cup
Sonoma, CA -- December 11, 2003 -- Three drivers from The Racer's Group finished in the top 15 for the 2003 Porsche World Cup, an annual award bestowed on the top independent Porsche drivers in the world. Team owner Kevin Buckler, 2002's Porsche Cup winner, finished 2nd in this year's standings, second only to Porsche factory driver Marc Lieb. Buckler's 2003 co-driver Cort Wagner, himself the 1999 Porsche Cup winner, finished in 6th place by a combination of high finishes in the ALMS series. Longtime TRG driver and 2002 2nd place finisher Michael Schrom finished 15th in the world despite a partial schedule of races on the season.
Buckler and Schrom teamed with Porsche factory drivers Timo Bernhard and Jorg Bergmeister to shock the racing world with their dominating overall win at the 2003 Rolex 24 Hours of Daytona, a win that will resonate in sports car history for years to come. Buckler's five podium finishes in American Le Mans and Grand-Am series races captured him second place in the standings.
"I was very happy to be standing on the stage for the second time at this fantastic event," Kevin said. "650 of the top Porsche people in the world attended the event, and it was a real honor to be back on the stage and get my second place award presented personally by Mr. Durheimer. I'd have to say that having three TRG drivers in the top 15 is pretty cool."
Cort Wagner, of Pacific Palisades, California, spoke of the achievement highly. "It's fantastic to close the 2003 season with this award," he said. "Having won 1st place in 1999 and having finished in the top 15 twice, it's always an honor to go to Weissach and be part of this elite group of motorsports drivers."
Michael Schrom, two-time winner at the 24 Hours of Daytona, commented on his Porsche Cup finish. "I was surprised that I finished in the top 15, because I finished mid-pack for most of the season. It seems that the Daytona win was a balloon payment early on. It was incredible to win that race, and again a great year running with TRG. I'm going on hiatus for the 2004 season because of some business commitments, but I'll be back."
