TRG: Two Cars in the Top Ten at Mobil 1 Twelve Hours of Sebring
Sebring, FL -- March 20, 2004 -- After twelve grueling hours of endurance racing in the Florida heat, two TRG Porsches finished in the top ten in the GT class. The #66 New Century Mortgage/TRG Porsche, driven by Cort Wagner, Kelly Collins and Porsche works driver Patrick Long finished a strong 8th place, after an extended stop to repair a broken shift cable. After the replacement, the trio steadily made up laps and race position, regaining four laps on the lead car to finish the race solidly in the top ten.
"It was good to lead the race for a time," said Patrick Long, "and this was a great learning experience for all of us. We're starting to gell as a team, and with a bit more development time in the car, we're going to be pushing for wins. As in all endurance racing, the little things add up, and had it not been for the shift cable, we would likely have come home 3rd. All in all, it's looking like a promising season with The Racer's Group."
Long's co-driver Cort Wagner, himself a former winner at Sebring, was tired and sore after the race, but offered the following: "The TRG car was flawless except for that one minor problem -- the crew worked like crazy to give us a great car, and they succeeded at it. The car was perfect, my co-drivers were fantastic, and I think that with a bit of testing, it's going to be a great year. We're thankful to New Century Mortgage, Monster Cable, the Auto Gallery and CDOC for their support -- without them, none of this is possible."
The #68 TRG Porsche, driven by Scots Iain Donaldson, Gregor Fisken and Piers Masarati, came home 9th, after starting the race twelfth. Masarati said, "My co-drivers and I drove the wheels off of the car. The crew put together an absolutely mega car, and we had a great time thrashing it 'round the track. Fantastic result."
Iain Donaldson, who in his career has run more than fifteen 24-Hour races, stated: "It was a happy little car -- just fantastic. For all the hard luck we had during the week, the crew just worked endlessly, and in the end, our race made up for all of it. And, hey! We even get to share a bit of prize money!"
The #67 Flamingo Resort/TRG Porsche 911 GT3 RSR, driven by Pierre Ehret, Marc Bunting and Jim Matthews, was ridden off the track at high speed by a Dyson Lola, and sustained significant damage to the rear end of the car. Driver Jim Matthews was unhurt. "Just was I was getting into turn 15," he said, "one of the Dyson cars got inside of me, hit me, and spun me into the wall."
The American Le Mans Series races again in round two, June 26-27 at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course.
