Mika Salo took the #62 Risi Competizione Ferrari F430 to fourth place in qualifying for Saturday's ALMS season-opener with a best time of 2:03.829. Qualifying was a tight run affair, with the two Ferraris of Bruni and Salo today unable to match the times set by GT2 pole-sitter Werner in the Farnbacher Loles Porsche, and Bergmeister's Flying Lizard Porsche. There has been little to choose between the two marques in the practice sessions to date, and all times in this afternoon's qualifying were slower than in this morning's practice session.
The Rosso red Ferrari will, however, start from the back of the grid to accommodate late-arriving Jaime Melo. Melo has been held up in Italy due to visa problems but will be at the track tomorrow (Friday).
Tracy Krohn was tasked with qualifying the Krohn green #61 Ferrari and, buoyed with some encouraging and consistent times in practice this morning, set about the task with relish. His best time of 2:08.386 places him on the sixth row of the GT2 grid, with all to play for in the race.
Mika Salo said after qualifying: "That was absolutely the maximum for our car today. We seem to have lost something since yesterday; the car was really good then but Sebring is a funny circuit and the balance is not as good now as it was yesterday. We worked on set up all day and were happy with it but today in qualifying it's changed. We are sure we know what the problem is and we've got another session tonight so we can make some changes and try it out.
"Every day at Sebring the track is different and you have to follow it and try and make changes to suit it. Every year it's the same and some days things look really bad and some days look really good. Hopefully our good day will be on Saturday!"
Tracy Krohn commented: "Actually the car behaved quite differently from this morning. I think for the rest of the week and the race we've got a very good race car. We usually do have a very good race car. This car, even with the tire set-up we have now, it could race. We think we can maximize it with a little different tweak just before the race. I'm looking forward to it."
