Law Looking Forward to ALMS Season Opener at Sebring 12 Hour with Flying Lizard Motorsports
Hopeful of a successful 2004 campaign, Flying Lizard Motorsports team driver Darren Law will get his chance to take to the track the weekend of March 20 at the season opening ALMS event for the 52nd annual Mobil 1 Twelve Hours of Sebring. Law is slated to drive the #45 Flying Lizard Porsche 911 GT3 RSR with season long teammate Johannes van Overbeek and 2002 Toyota Atlantic champion Jon Fogarty, in the GT class.
Law sees a solid opportunity with the Flying Lizard organization, and has been encouraged with results from recent test sessions.
"We tested at Sebring a few weeks ago, and were pleasantly surprised and encouraged at the speed that we found," remarked Law. "The preparation on the car was top notch, as you would expect from a team at this level, and the Michelin tire was phenomenal. Of course we have our work cut out for us with 22 other cars in the GT field, but I think we have a strongly competitive effort."
After recently competing in the Daytona 24 Hour, Law sees the 12-hour Sebring event as no less grueling, and in some respects more difficult.
Law had this to say about the two endurance marathons. "A 24 hour race has some obvious challenges, not the least of which is the lack of sleep for drivers and crew, and the attrition rate is always an issue. Even though Sebring is half the time by the watch, the challenge is still quite intense as we are forced to run the race much harder. We will be pushing the cars close to what we would do in a sprint race, and for 12 hours that can definitely take its toll. As always, reliability is going to be one of the majors factors, but we are also going to have show some solid and consistent speed."
In addition to the sheer endurance aspect of the Sebring 12 Hour event, the 3.5 mile airfield based racetrack itself presents some well-known challenges of its own. "Trying to get a good compromise set-up for Sebring can be pretty tough," said Law. "There are some pretty decent sized bumps, so the car needs to be set-up with some compliance in the chassis, but we also need it to be fast through some of the smoother sections in the back."
